St Catherine

The first Study Day organised by Glasgow Lay Dominicans to honour St Catherine of Siena took place in 1990 when Glasgow was celebrating being 'European City of Culture'.

WHO WAS ST CATHERINE OF SIENA?

She was born Caterina Benincasa in Siena in Italy in 1347. From an early age she believed she was called to serve Jesus Christ, and despite opposition from her parents who wanted her to marry, she became a Sister of Penance of St Dominic at the age of eighteen. She was not a nun, but a lay woman within the ethos and protection of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans.

WHY WAS SHE A SAINT?

Catherine was an extraordinary follower of Christ. She gave herself to him and to his service totally. Like St Dominic, her devotion to prayer, to saving souls, to helping the poor and sick, to defending and renewing the Church, was boundless.

WHY HAVE A 'STUDY DAY'?

As Dominicans, we wanted to offer Glasgow an opportunity each year on the Saturday nearest St Catherine's Feast Day, April 29th, to learn more about an aspect of faith or morals by providing 'time out' of ordinary life, in comfortable surroundings, with interesting and informed speakers. Though an ordinary woman, Catherine became renowned for her faith and wisdom and is a Doctor of the Church. Everyone can become better informed about the faith they profess.
